Every time I make a purchase I’m also making a statement, placing a vote, for the types of products and practices I believe in. I do my best to support companies who are honest, transparent, and choose ingredients and practices that are good for my family and good for the environment.
Unfortunately, it’s not always as easy as it seems. Lately, I’m discovering that more and more of my “trusted” brands are actually owned by companies I do my best not to support. For example, Pepsi Co. owns Naked Juice. Pepsi recently gave $1.7 million to OPPOSE GMO labeling in California. Since I fully support Prop 37 and GMO labeling that means no more Naked Juice for me. Good thing we just invested in a Vitamix!
This discovery sent me searching to learn more about who may have quietly acquired some of my other favorite brands and I was really surprised at what I uncovered. Did you know? Odwalla is owned by Coca-Cola, Muir Glen is owned by General Mills and Seeds of Change is owned by M&M/Mars! If you vote with your food dollars, you’ll want to check out this list and info graphic and share it with your family and friends. Just one more reason to support local and choose homemade when possible.
Since I know we are all busy, and occasionally need the support of quicker and easier products I created a list of brands that are still independently owned and offer healthy products that I feel good about offering my family. Check them out and give them your vote by choosing their products!
