My favorite healthy living apps for iPhone

I’ve found a lot of great apps that help inspire, educate and track our healthy living activities.  Recently, I’ve discovered two new apps that are probably my favorite of the whole bunch. 

The first is called Locavore.  It’s an app that helps you find locally grown produce and food, but it’s so much more than that.  Last month, I participated in an Eat Local Challenge put on by Mary Crimmins of Conscious Kitchen.  It made me so aware of just how difficult it is to truly eat local.  It’s not just about finding the food, but also about figuring out what’s in season and how to prepare it.  This app helps with all of that.  You can find a local farmer’s market, find out what produce they have available and how long it will be in season and then access a recipe to prepare it.  Very cool and inspiring!  I’ll be using this one a lot!

The second app is Fooducate.  It’s a handy little tool to have along at the grocery store to help you make more informed choices.  There’s so much “healthy” marketing on just about every product these days.  It’s hard to sort the good from the bad, but Fooducate does help.  All you have to do is take a photo of the products bar code and the app tells you the good, the bad and the ugly about that product.  It will even suggest healthier alternatives.  You still have to make a decision based on the information at hand, but at least it’s an informed decision.  I tried it on the Back To Nature Crispy Wheat Crackers I buy for my boys and found out they rated a C+ because they’re made with refined flour not whole grain.  I missed that in my review of the ingredients, but now I have a list of several better options so we’ll be making a change.
