A Healthier Tailgate

When I think of tailgating I think burgers and hotdogs, chili, chips, creamy, layered dips, cookies, brownies, beer and soda.  It’s a party so it’s ok to splurge, but there are a

A healthier tailgate

few simple things you can do to lose the bad fat and preservatives without losing the taste or the fun.  Below are some tips and recipes that are taste tested and family approved at our house.

Menu for a Healthier Tailgate:

  • Replace traditional hot dogs w/ Applegate farms organic, grass-fed, nitrate free hot dogs.  Use organic, grass-fed beef for hamburgers and chili and add tons of fresh veggies like onion, diced peppers and tomatoes.
  • Replace traditional hot dog/hamburger buns with Arnold Whole Wheat buns (no high fructose corn syrup) or forget the bun all together.
  • Replace chips and processed dips with healthy finger foods like fresh fruits and veggies and make your own homemade dips. (Yogurt Fruit Dip, Veggie Ranch Dip, Guacamole)
  • Make your own dessert.  When it’s homemade you control the ingredients.  Try the “healthier” chocolate chip cookies from  Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food.  They’re a favorite at our house.
