I’m only half way through Real Food by Nina Planck, but I couldn’t wait any longer to talk about it because I want everyone to read it. It’s like a juicy novel that I just can’t
put down except the love affair in this book is with food – real, traditional food.
If I had picked this book up two years ago I might have been skeptical even scared by what I’ve read. But this far into our family’s journey to change the way we eat I’ve found that Real Food is tying it all together. Nina’s ideas and experiences challenge the way we’ve been taught to cook, shop and eat for the last 50 years or more.
Nina’s life has taken her on a journey from family farm to vegetarian and back to real food via the first farmer’s markets in London (which she started). It’s this journey and the impact it had on her health, weight and way of thinking that drew me in. She isn’t speaking as a scientist, a doctor or a food industry representative. She’s speaking as a real woman and now mother who learned by doing, seeing and making mistakes. She does support and explain her personal experiences with history and research, which enhanced my understanding and made the science of food easier to grasp.
The experience of reading this book was akin to watching Food Inc. I found myself online searching for ways to make additional changes to our diets – specifically incorporating more real food from local farms and less processed meat from plants. My trip to the grocery store yesterday took twice as long as usual as I read, asked questions and looked for the right foods to nourish my family. But it’s worth the time and after a few trips I’ll have it down.
Thank you Nina for sharing your story!
